Furniture Designed for Growth.
We design and build children’s furniture that blends function, safety, and timeless craftsmanship—supporting a child’s independence while elevating everyday spaces.
Our Story
As parents, Matthew and Dennis saw firsthand how a thoughtfully designed environment can nurture a child’s independence, creativity, and confidence. While raising their own children, they noticed a gap: most furniture wasn’t made with children's developmental needs in mind. This sparked the idea behind AlderBourn—furniture that empowers kids to explore their world safely, freely, and beautifully.
With complementary backgrounds in fine woodworking and construction, the duo combined their shared values and skills to bring AlderBourn to life.
Matthew, a custom woodworker, leads product design and production, ensuring each piece is crafted with precision, purpose, and a deep understanding of how children interact with their space.
Dennis, a licensed general contractor, oversees product safety, structural integrity, and business operations, including customer experience and long-term growth.
At AlderBourn, they’re united by the belief that well-designed furniture can serve as a meaningful foundation for childhood—supporting independence, inspiring imagination, and giving parents peace of mind.
The name AlderBourn brings together two powerful ideas: strength and adaptability. "Alder" reflects our dedication to high-quality, solid wood furniture, inspired by the resilience of the alder tree. "Bourn," meaning stream, symbolizes the constant movement and transformation of childhood. Our pieces are thoughtfully designed to grow with your child, supporting every stage of life with ease and intention.
Our signature colors take inspiration from two sources of strength and beauty: the Chocolate Cosmos, a rare flower with rich burgundy petals and the comforting scent of warm cookies, and the lion, a timeless symbol of courage, warmth, and resilience. Just like this unexpected pairing, our palette reflects the essence of AlderBourn—strong yet gentle, bold yet inviting.
Like these symbols, AlderBourn creations possess an inherent duality. They are built with the strength of a lion’s roar yet carry the gentle whisper of petals. Our work doesn’t merely occupy space—it transforms it into something that feels both powerful and welcoming, grounded yet refined.
The AlderBourn identity was designed by Dennis’ wife, Anne. Our typeface, Cinzel Decorative, connects to Anne’s Portuguese roots—the word "cinzel" means chisel. For us, the chisel represents more than a tool; it's a symbol of transformation. It’s through careful, skilled craftsmanship that raw wood becomes lasting beauty. Every AlderBourn piece is a continuation of that legacy: intentional, refined, and built to endure.
